Rainwater harvesting is the storage and collection of rain from rooftops and other surfaces. The water is usually stored in rainwater tanks or directed into mechanisms which recharge groundwater. Rainwater harvesting is relatively new in Dublin, but it is widely used in many parts of the world, such as China, Brazil, Africa and India, where there is ample rain for collection and other water resources either do not exist or are at risk of being over-used to supply a large population of people. Off course, going back 100 years, rainwater harvesting in the more traditional sense would have been very popular in Ireland, but more modern harvesting techniques have not yet been widely adapted. However, as the growing trend of global warming becomes more and more obvious, it is inevitable that more and more of us will adapt techniques such as this. To our knowledge, there is not yet a website dedicated to rainwater harvesting – if you would be interested in seeing this happen please e-mail us and let us know.
